Hurt(a very short story)

HURT

Tom was a very quiet and shy young man. He didn’t mix very easily with anyone but the members of his family. Tom met Laura at the local bakery, she worked behind the counter and had served him many times. She was a very confident young lady. She asked Tom out on a date, he would never have asked her. He was just to shy. They went out a couple of times .On the third date while Tom was driving home Laura slid her hand down his trousers, they pulled into a lay-by and she was all over him. Tom had never even been kissed before that night. Two months later Laura told Tom she was pregnant.

Tom and Laura were married and three months later the baby was born. Tom was over the moon. Toms happiness was short lived. Laura started to go out most nights and leave Tom with the baby. She expected Tom to do all night feeds, even though he had to work during the day. She started to be very controlling ,cruel and lazy. When he got home from work, no dinner was ready and she would go out and leave him to look after the baby. Soon Laura was pregnant again, this was when the emotional blackmail started .She would threaten to tale the kids and leave if Tom didn’t do as she wanted.

“You will never see them again, she hissed!

Tom didn’t want to loose the children he loved so much, so he always let Laura have her way. So this was how life continued for years, Laura controlled Tom and the 4 children. After ten years Tom despised his horrible wife. He only stayed with her because of the children, he loved them so much. They were his life. The kids loved Tom as much as they hated their mother.
“ Why do you stay with her” the kids asked

But Tom thought if they parted Laura would get custody of the kids and she would not let him see them. The mother always got custody Tom thought. He couldn’t bear the thought of the kids having to live with her. Tom and Laura had four children, two boys and two girls. When the youngest reached eighteen Tom decided he would stand up to Laura.
Tom was in the kitchen preparing the dinner for the next day when Laura came home. It was 10.30pm.

“ Where do you go at nights” he asked
“I go and find a real man to satisfy me” she hissed.
“What, but why” said Tom
“cos I hate you” said Laura.
“I only wanted you to provide for me and to look after the kids .I’ve been using you for years” she said
Tom was so angry and hurt to think Laura had never loved him.
“The kids are probably not yours “she scowled

Tom saw red ,the next thing he knew Laura was laying on the floor in a pool of blood. Tom was standing over her with a large knife in his hand.
Tom was sent to prison for manslaughter, a broken man. He still loved all the children, even though they may not all be his. They all loved him too. They all visited him as often as they could. When he was released from prison he went to live with his eldest son.
Tom spent his latter years looking after his grandchildren. Tom never married again, he couldn’t trust anyone again. He died at the age of 85 with all his children and grandchildren around him, after all they were his life.

Great story Richard, very sad, but glad the grandchildren were there at the end.
